This was a group project in which I designed a roof top garden for a private school in Greensboro that educates children K-12, and wants to relocate and create new environments and innovative ways for children to learn.

I worked on the upper rendered portion of the plan, done in sketchup.

My family decorated our 5 year olds bedroom for under $500. We all used our talents and creative minds to create a place she would love to be in.....her first room all to herself!

We started as a small group. Our project was chose along with one other project to move forward to the second round of design. Our main goal was to celebrate the Mills during their prime exploring machinery and the daily life of the people who worked within the mill.

As a group we took the given aspects to consider and added a few. Then found their relationships to one another. We allowed the relationships to show their logical adjacency, spatial, and hierarchical aspects. We chose not to limit ourselves to the confines of the floor plan and to rather focus on the needs of the type of space we are creating. We feel that once we understand the needs of the space we can then figure how to lay them out within the rectangle we have been provided.

Pictures of the textile factory Revolution Mills when it was still in use. Our current project is turning this space into retail space. Part of making that design decision takes researching the different kinds of retail spaces. Below are definitions and pictures of different retail spaces.

Mall- Also called shopping mall. a large retail complex containing a variety of stores and often restaurants and other business establishments housed in a series of connected or adjacent buildings or in a single large building.

Bazaar-

Ambrosia- Willl be reworked

This project was completed in two weeks. From conception to final material selection and movie completion. I am currently reworking the project to fine tune it based upon my final critique.
My Concept for this project is Undiscovered Treasure and my product Candy.
Ambrosia is a candy shop that entices you to enter through a dramatic store front, that leaves you wondering what's inside.The Visual Merchandising reading gave me professional knowledge to complete the layout of the store as well as the store front and window. The large rounded doors give a peek into one of the stores main attractions the scented bubble room meant to enjoy by all. Put your feet up, watch the bubbles overhead and enjoy the dramatic window display. This store is appealing to all of the senses from the scented bubbles and taste-n-smell bar, to the glowing walls and fixtures, the upbeat music, the feel of bubbles, candy wrappers, and slick 3-Form all around, and the taste of delicious exotic fruit candy.The atmosphere within the store is playful with a sultry ambiance from all of the pink and white glowing fixtures and the brushed stainless. The main colors are light and dark gray, pink, and white as seen in the logo, though the color of the candy displays alternate to match their flavor. The products sold evolve around candy, candy being the main product, but also selling candy scented lotion and perfume, and gift baskets.

We switched concepts and products! I now have Undiscovered Treasure as my concept and Candy as my product. I have taken that to jewel colored and shaped displays with treasures inside. Candy I have taken to an exotic level of flavor using exotic fruit flavored hard candies and selling perfumes of the same scent. So here is a breakdown of Ambrosia. Thanks Allison.

Entrance: I hadn't spent much time on the store front, I really just focused on the window and displays. So for the store front. How about an abstraction of bubbles that hides the building and partially blocks the window. Mystery achieved!

The room still has a few finishing touches to take place once school lets out for the summer, but here are some pictures of our very lived in and loved in attic bedroom. We plan to change the white-cross railing, add a stair railing, and do something fantastic with the space above the stairs, add in flat screen tv attached to the fire place.

A welcoming experience of Panama awaits with my custom mat.

Beginning sketch of Panama.

Panama

I began my Welcome Mat project with a precedent study of Panama. Through the information I gathered I developed a concept of Pause and Experience!
The majority of the population of Panama now reside in urban environments and this welcome mat will help provide them with a way to experience the roots and foundations of their country.
The idea is to take a moment to experience Panama through your feet. So take off your shoes and feel your way through Panama.

Data:
*Panama was founded in 1519 and is today a fusion of races and traditions.
*The country has Pre-Colombian Heritage/Spanish and Caribbean Influences
*The population consists of 70% Mestizo, 14% Amerindian and West Indian Mix, 10% Caucasian, 6% Amerindian
*29% of the country's land are considered National Parks
*The country has beaches, mountains which are part of the Continental Divide, and rainforest's.
*The Panama Canal is located here connecting the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans and is a main portal for trade
*The country is surrounded by two oceans- the Caribbean Sea and Pacific Ocean
*The highest percentage of the work force is in Agriculture
*The main agriculture is rice, corn, sugar, oranges, and bananas
* A natural resource is copper
*Mahogany, Cativo, and Cedar grow in abundance
*The Capital is Panama City and over 1/2 of the population lives there
*Clothing and textiles are a main export- one of the Popular styles is Mola hand sewn by the Kuna women
* Much of the Cuisine is influenced by the Caribbean and South American-tamales, empinadas, and plantains
*Popular music is Rock and Roll and Hispanic

I developed a Mat that evokes all the senses in an inviting way. The first block is filled with rice, something we don't usually feel with our feet but is an amazing new experience, then warm water filled with orange rinds that feel strangely wonderful on your feet and as you squish them the orange smell is released into the air, the next step is into lush greenery that is watered by your dripping feet, and then onto a squishy pillow to dry your feet and bounce you into the home....hope all that experience Panama enjoy it!

Bold Transitions:
Transition of color, transition of space, transition of life.

Our design consists of Private areas transitioning into communal areas; connecting individuals to public spaces with bold statements through color, material, and innovative form.

My concept has evolved showing a stronger presence of the term bold and revolution. The use of sustainable Eco-friendly materials and appliances shows support to the current Green Revolution in Architecture. The bold use of color and integration of many different materials along with the geometric shapes and organization of the spaces, emulates the bold changes these young women will be making through the restructuring of their lives and community support. Overall the building provides the young women with a safe, chic, and Earth friendly "Urban Vernacular" dwelling to call HOME!

A representation of soft/hard and smooth/rough using wood and metal. I now wish I would have pushed my use of the wood a little harder, and made a two more contrasting pieces of metal looking back at the actual requirements. However, I still think its really cool for a first year project and its currently hanging in my mother's bedroom.

Our first project of second year was to create a 32 square foot dwelling. Our dwelling brought the outdoors in incorporating natural light! We spent a week designing the space, a week building the wall units, and one week of on sight construction and assembly.

Goddess Ritual

What a fun Year! I took this challenge of creating a tray and ritual to go along with it and applied it to an activity in my life. Drinking wine with my girlfriends. This is the pandoras box of ladies night complete with: a hand made storage chest, removable serving tray, cork screw, goblets, decanter, wine storage area,wine bag, and completed with a goddess ritual prayer.

Original design to be reworked and incorporated into my portfolio. The photos are a little yellow, but this things will all be resolved in time....in first year we had no clue of the wonders of Photoshop, or keeping up with photographing our work for that matter.

I look forward to reworking this project for my portfolio!

Habitable wall with a scale model.

The challenge of this project was to create a habitable wall for a client specific to that clients needs and character. My client was James Turrel and I created a wall that was all about simple form, strong lines, and light.
